Celebrity Summit Sunset Balcony Stateroom

By Jeannette and Dan Dudek

This was the first time we had a true balcony on a cruise. When we mentioned to others that our stateroom was at the stern of the ship, they all told us how much we would enjoy the views when docked. We were told such staterooms were referred to as “Sunset Balcony Staterooms” as they frequently had great views of the port in the evenings. We did use the balcony a few times, and it was enjoyable – just not as great an experience as we expected.

During a lecture on navigation given by Captain Theodoros, we understood the situation. One guest asked the captain why he was not backing into docks as they had expected from being on past cruises. The captain explained that how to approach and dock the ship was the personal preference of the captain, and he felt more comfortable with a bow first entry.

Thus in ports where the docks were pointing towards the city, the stern staterooms would face the sea. From then on, we realized that all the other ships docking near us had their sterns facing the city. While we certainly want the captain to feel comfortable about docking, we would have preferred he use the power of the ship’s Azipods and Forward Thrusters to position the ship with the stern (and our balcony) facing the city.

Stateroom and Amenities – The cabin amenities included:

  • Safe
  • Stocked mini-bar

Every day our exceptional room attendant not only cleaned the room and replaced the towels, he also kept our ice bucket filled and delivered canapés every evening for pre-dinner appetizers.

Special requests were no issue. He obtained and taped down an extension cord so we could have an electrical connection for a medical device that had to be located on the bedside table; and he found for our use some “push-through” tuxedo buttons we forgot to pack.
