The Bahamas is made up of an archipelago of 700 islands in over 100,000 square miles of ocean. Some of the islands are as close as 50 miles from the coast of Florida. The Bahamas was originally called the Lucayans until being changed by Ponce de Leon’s Spanish expedition in 1513. The capital city of Nassau, located on the island of New Providence (11th largest island), is the largest city. The British Colony of Bermuda located in the Atlantic has a population of about 67,000 within 20.75 square miles. It is the fifth smallest country and third most densely populated place in the world. There are120+ islands, but the eight larger islands (measuring just 22 miles long and almost two miles at the widest point), connected by causeways and bridges, are where the residents live. The main towns to visit are St. George and Hamilton – both accessible from Kings Wharf by ferry, bus, taxi and mini-bus.

Celebrity Silhouette started passing by St. George at 11 AM, picked up the pilot, and slowly made her way along the north shore to Kings Wharf over the next two hours. Port Notes: Lisbon is the capital and largest city in Portugal. WJ has visited Lisbon a number of times in the past, but always enjoys returning and exploring. Silhouette’s berth was at the Lisbon Cruise Port which is a 10-15 minute walk to the main downtown (Rua Augusta). With the weather being wet and windy, it was a great idea to pop into stores and cafes we’ve previously just walked past. We really could have spent some money shopping if we had room in our luggage – some terrific clothing, shoes, souvenirs and foodie finds made in Portugal.

Tip: The last 10 days of each month is when the Mercado da Baixa is open and a great place to sample local food and drink. Also a nice selection of Portuguese crafts to purchase. For your custard tart fix (Nata de Lisboa) go to Nata De Lisboa at 22 Rua Augusta for a nata and cafe – you won’t regret it!
