If you wish to visit the interior of the Budapest Parliament building it is necessary to take a guided tour. These tours are available in a wide variety of languages and last approximately 45-50 minutes.
Budapest Parliament Building – Facts & Figures:
- Two decades of construction began in 1884
- It is located on the Pest bank of the Danube River
- The architect was Imre Steindl – his inspiration for the neo-Gothic style came from London’s Houses of Parliament
- It is the third largest parliament building in the world
- The building is 268 meters/879 feet long and 123 meters/405 feet wide at the center
- Has 691 rooms
- Has 20 kilometers/12.5 miles of stairs if they were combined – the Grand Staircase is the most impressive
- The Central Dome reaches 96 meters/315 feet high
- The Cupola Room houses the Hungarian Coronation Regalia – Holy Crown, orb, sceptre, Renaissance sword
- 40 kilograms/88 lbs of gold were used on the interior
- Cigar holders line the window sills outside the debate chamber – each holder is numbered so members don’t smoke the wrong cigar (unless they forget their number)
- Ceiling frescoes are by Károly Lotz
- Painted glass windows are by Miksa Róth
- The Dome Hall houses16 statues of Hungarian leaders
- There are 386 Hungarian Parliament members – they are elected every 4 years
