WJ Tested: Cruising the Sava River from Belgrade, Serbia
WJ Tested: Cruising the Sava River from Belgrade, Serbia
Day 8:
After an interesting morning spent exploring the archaeological site of Viminacium (ancient Roman town and fortress), the remainder of our afternoon was spent relaxing as we cruised the Danube River.
Just before 5:00 p.m. Uniworld River Princess approached Belgrade, Serbia’s capital and largest city. The afternoon schedule indicated that we would be taking a scenic cruise along the Sava River, with commentary from Tour Manager Heiner Schmidt.
With 2nd Captain Valentyn in charge of navigation along the Sava we enjoyed wonderful views of Belgrade as we cruised by.
The next hour was spent watching locals play in the river, relax at floating waterfront restaurants and follow along with us on their pleasure boats – everyone appeared to be on holiday!
Did You Know?… Sava River:
- Is approximately 1000 km (700 miles) long
- Was called River Savus by the Romans
- Flows through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia
- Is a natural boundary between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia
- Starts its journey in the Julian Alps of Slovenia
- Joins the Danube River at Belgrade
- Is the third longest tributary of the Danube
At approximately 6:00 p.m. and while we were enjoying cocktails in the lounge, River Princess docked alongside another ship in the Belgrade port. Shortly thereafter, it was time for Heiner’s port talk, followed by dinner in the restaurant.
After dinner, local Serbian Folklore entertainment in the lounge by “Talija” took place – high energy and lots of costume changes.
Following the show we called it a night, wanting to be well rested for the included tour of Belgrade the next morning.
