Included Shore Excursion on Uniworld River Princess Eastern Europe Explorer Danube River Cruise
Day 7:
As Uniworld River Princess continued cruising the Danube towards Donji Milanovac in Serbia, passengers were treated to a Balkan-style barbeque on the Sun Deck. There were a variety of sausages from the region we were travelling through and although we were not long finished with breakfast many guests enjoyed the tastings.
At 11:00 a.m. we were pulling up to the dock in Donji Milanovac for a 2-hour stop, and Cruise Manager Heiner handed out maps of the town and pointed guests in the direction of souvenir shops, grocery stores and the local craft market.
Those that weren’t comfortable walking into town by themselves were able to join Heiner for a brief stroll to the center (Donji Milanovac is tiny, so it’s impossible to get lost).
Did You Know?… Donji Milanovac:
- Is a small town in eastern Serbia
- Has moved twice – first due to flooding, then to construction of a dam
- The famous Mesolithic archaeological site – Lepenski vir – is nearby
- Is the seat of the national park for the Iron Gates
We made a quick dash to the grocery store in search of Serbian beer (we feel it is important to eat and drink locally in order to get a true feel for a destination). The first shop we encountered had a great selection of local beer but only took local currency (which we didn’t have). So we were only able to purchase Austrian beer (still new to us and very good) from another shop that did accept euros.
A buffet lunch was available in the ship’s restaurant between noon and 1:30 p.m. for those that were still hungry and needed something to tide them over until the 4:00 p.m. Tea Time in the lounge.
The remainder of the afternoon was spent enjoying the scenery along the Danube through Serbia and Romania, and we did this both from our stateroom and the Sun Deck. We also played a few games of shuffleboard while on the Sun Deck and a few other passengers entertained themselves with the giant-size chess board.
Following a brief port talk about Kostolac and Viminacium by Cruise Manager Heiner Schmidt, it was time for dinner in the restaurant.
Did You Know?… Kostolac:
- Is a small Serbian town on the Danube River
- There are many vacation homes along the Danube in this area
- There is an electric power plant here
- Nearby is the ancient Roman site of Viminacium
- A mammoth field was found in a Kostolac coal pit in 2012
Once we arrived in Kostolac we were entertained by the Ansambl Triola (Belgrade Old Town music) in the lounge. After their excellent performance was over, the remainder of the evening was spent dancing to the music of Freddy.
