Daily Itinerary ~ Day 3 – Arles

For early risers coffee and pastries were available in the Patio lounge between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.

An extensive hot-and-cold buffet breakfast was available in the Cezanne restaurant between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

At 9:00 a.m. an optional lecture was held in the Renoir lounge about “Vincent Van Gogh’s troubled destiny”. This proved to be very informative and interesting.

By 10:00 a.m. all passengers who were going on the two-hour guided walking tour of Arles had their Audiovox systems in place and were meeting their guide.

We were under the great care and guidance of an English-speaking local guide, Frances. She was a total delight, both extremely knowledgeable and quite clever.

12:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. – An extensive hot-and-cold buffet lunch was served in the Cezanne restaurant. Or, for passengers who wanted a light lunch, a small selection of lunch items was available in the Renoir lounge.

At 1:30 p.m. the departure took place for the optional tour: Olive Farm and Village of Les Baux de Provence.  This was a four-hour event with a drive into the countryside of Provence, visit to the olive mill with wine and tapanade tasting, followed by a guided walking tour of Les Baux and some free time to explore the hamlet before the 30-minute drive back to Arles.

For those passengers not taking the optional tour, they had the rest of the afternoon to themselves. As the ship was still docked in Arles, some ventured back into town (it was only a short walk – 10 minutes to the old-town center), while others relaxed or caught up on jet-lag.

By 5:30 p.m. we were all back onboard as River Royale was due to set sail for Avignon by 6:00 p.m.

The Captain’s welcome cocktail was held in the Renoir lounge at 6:45 p.m. and during this time further crew introductions were made and Tony gave a port talk of what to expect in Avignon the next morning.

Following the welcome cocktail it was time for the Captain’s welcome dinner in the Cezanne restaurant. We had been invited to join Captain Rech and Tony at the Captain’s table for dinner which turned out to be with four other gal-pals.

Just as dinner was wrapping up, River Royale arrived in Avignon, so a number of passengers decided to take an evening walk to the old city – within 5-10 minutes away.

For those of us that wanted to stay on the ship there was live music in the Renoir lounge with an entertainer from Avignon, Paolo Nassi.
