WJ Tested: RoamingMan 4G Mobile WiFi Hotspot Review
by WAVEJourney
WJ was provided with the RoamingMan 4G Mobile WiFi Hotspot to test in Europe (Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, France, England, Scotland) during our adventures from May to July, 2017.
The RoamingMan hotspot was invaluable for staying connected throughout the 10 countries we visited. It was especially helpful to have this device on hand when we were driving the countryside in both Spain and France and wanted to connect to online maps and GPS.
Data is available globally and unlimited each day. We found some countries in Europe did reduce the 4G speed significantly once the hotspot reached 500 MB of data use in a 24-hour period. This isn’t something RoamingMan can control – it’s the fair use policies of various countries around the world.
The best part about having your own hotspot to use all day long is you’re not worried about security as the device is password protected and secure. We are not keen on using public WiFi to conduct banking or even check emails (even when we turn on our VPN).
We were able to connect to the hotspot with all of our devices (5 devices can connect at the same time), and shared the password with friends on a few occasions so everyone could securely access email and social media. Devices we used to connect to the hotspot included Windows 10 operated laptops, Mac laptops, Android smartphones, Android tablets, iPods and IOS iPhones.
With 150MBPS download speeds and 50MBPS upload speeds (depending on location and that speed being available on the service it connects to), we found the RoamingMan hotspot to provide much faster speed than our home cable internet service.
The hotspot can also double as a back-up battery charger – handy for charging the smartphones when about to run out of power. It also has a battery life of about 15 hours – which is much better than other hotspots we’ve tested that completely drain within a few hours. This does make the device heavier than some other hotspots we’ve used, but we are not complaining as the extended battery life is invaluable. Charging from near empty to full took about 4 hours, which was easy to do overnight.
In the hotspot carry case, it ships with a short USB cord for charging. This short cord really isn’t practical when some electrical outlets are higher than 4-6 inches from the counter or floor. Many times we had to get very creative with finding items to stack so it would reach the plug. We also found the case too bulky and left it at home (just put the hotspot in a small padded gadget sleeve we have on hand).
The device is simple to use and easily fits in a pocket. Connecting in new destinations or countries initially took only a couple of minutes to find the nearest cell tower.
During a flight delay in France, we were only able to connect with WiFi and reach the airline’s customer service because we had the hotspot. Our SIM card wouldn’t work and there was no working airport WiFi in the area we were waiting. This was priceless and the hotspot continued to work while we were stuck in the plane sitting on the tarmac and not able to get any information from the flight crew. Priceless!
Although there were some places we visited that the hotspot was limited in connectivity (this was due to lack of cell/mobile tower coverage), we would have been lost without this RoamingMan 4G Mobile WiFi hotspot!
