The odyssey begins on land in Athens, where travelers will spend two days exploring the city’s most ancient landmarks, including the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Hadrian’s Arch, and Constitution Square, and the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first Olympic Games of modernity were held in 1896. Travelers will climb the Acropolis to marvel at the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion, and the Parthenon, a masterpiece of Athens’ Golden Age. After an informative visit to the Acropolis Museum, opened in 2009, guests will enjoy an afternoon of sightseeing, shopping and exploring the Plaka, the oldest section of Athens. They will also enjoy a dinner at Dionysus, a restaurant with stunning views of the Acropolis. The next day includes a trip to Delphi, situated on the slopes of Mount Parnasus and once believed to be the center of the earth. It was here, at the temple of Apollo, that the high priestess Pythia delivered her famous prophesies. After visits to the treasury and the Delphi museum, where guests will receive an exclusive lecture by a local historian, and afterwards a traditional Greek “mezes” lunch and wine tasting at a local winery, the tour returns to Athens for the night. The next day travelers will enjoy a lovely lunch at the seaside restaurant Zorbas, overlooking the Mikrolimano Piraeus in Athens, before embarking on their sea voyage.

The odyssey continues by sea when travelers board a yacht in Athens and embark upon a cruise of the Aegean. First stop is Cape Sounion, which contains the ruins of an ancient Greek temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea in classic mythology! After a brief visit to the island of Kea and an optional tour of the island Delos, the ship drops anchor at Mykonos. Known for its distinctive 16th century windmills, Mykonos’ beautiful bays are ideal for swimming and its combination of traditional and modern lifestyles make it a uniquely appealing destination. Next, the tour comes to Santorini, a popular honeymooners’ paradise, which offers an old world view of traditional Greek life. Adventurous guests may even ride a donkey, which are still used to transport goods, along the steep cliffs overlooking the sea.  Visitors also have the option of visiting Akrotiri, a Bronze Age excavation site on the island of Santorini, or Oia, a beautiful village settlement with breathtaking views of the caldera. After leaving Santorini, the ship sails to Rethymnon, a port on the island of Crete, where guests will have the option to explore Knossos, a Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete’s northern shore. The ship then docks at Kythira, a lesser known Greek gem of an island that offers ideal swimming for travelers who can also spend a leisurely evening exploring the main town of Chora.

Moving on, the tour comes to Monemvassia, a remarkable medieval fortified town with uniquely Byzantine and Venetian architecture. Departing Monemvassia, the ship sails to Nafplion, a charming port town with an old quarter known for its narrow streets and characteristic period architecture. While there, guests may choose to take a tour of Mycenae, the impressive walled palace built by Homer’s Achaean King Agamemnon. Travelers also have a final opportunity to explore the islands of Hydra and Spetses before returning to Athens for departure.

*Tour pricing begins at $3,990 and includes a three-night stay at the 5-star Royal Olympic Hotel, a 7-day cruise on Variety Cruise Line’s luxury Harmony V yacht, daily buffet breakfast, all cruise meals, all transfers, sightseeing tours of Delphi and Athens, local guides, traditional mezes lunch, wine tastings, welcome dinner and a special welcome gift.
