Portable Solar Charger For Mobile Devices
WJ Tested: Portable Solar Charger For Mobile Devices
Following the Carnival Triumph cruise ship engine room fire in February, we decided to take another look at what items we typically carry with us when we travel.
What do you do when the power goes out for more than a couple of hours and you need to charge your gadgets? It’s one thing to be in the comfort of your own home and lose power for a few hours – that’s pretty inconvenient. But, can you image if you were stranded at sea for 4-5 days and there was no electricity? We shudder at the mere thought of it!
So, as our travel emergency kit was pretty complete (headlamp and extra batteries being the numero uno item) except for having the ability to recharge electronics, we sought out solar chargers to add to our list of devices. As with all the items we take on our travels, we needed a solar charging device that was compact, lightweight and easy to use.
We settled on the following two mini solar chargers to add to our travel kit:
- Manhattan Solar Power Pack: This is a small device that comes with a variety of cable attachments. The attachments can be packed inside the included travel pouch. The power pack can be charged through a USB port or with solar power (direct sunlight). We have been able to use it with our iPod Touch, Samsung Galaxy 5″ Tablet, and digital camera batteries. Charging from the USB port on a laptop took about 4 hours. This device provides up to an additional 45+/- hours of juice for gadgets.
- Juicebar Mini Multi-Device Solar Charger: This worked well with our iPod Touch (and probably would work just as well with other mobile devices. It is a handy solar charger that provides around 2 hours of power. This can also be charged via a USB port or from solar. The charger comes with 3 connectors that will fit most portable gadgets. In our opinion, this is worth packing the extra 2 oz weight for the added convenience of staying connected.
