WAVEJourney Finds Fabulous Tapas in Barcelona, Spain

Anytime we are looking for a great place to eat in a town or city that is unfamiliar to us, we wander the streets and look for busy places full of locals. Sure, the odd tourist will have the same idea we do – searching out the local joints – but for the most part we are surrounded by the natives… and that’s a good thing. Wandering along Barcelona’s Las Ramblas, in search of more great tapas, we spotted the hustle and bustle at Cerveceria Naviera Hosteleria Alemana. Anywhere that busy is worth a closer look…

Stepping inside the entrance we were greeted by a selection of tapas – hot and cold – that instantly started our mouths salivating and our gastric juices rumbling.

The further inside we ventured into this incredibly busy cave-like building, the more tapas selection we found. We were surrounded! At first there was nowhere to sit, so we scoured the cerveceria to try and spot anyone that may be close to finishing. Luckily for us, right at the tapas bar a couple of women were paying their bill, so we stood directly behind them and claimed ownership of their soon to be vacant seats.

For us, not understanding most of the Spanish menu, the decision was made easier by being able to point to the items we wanted to sample. Of course we need a beer to accompany whatever our choices may be, so two large beers were the first order.

Then we decided to each have one of the small cold tapas. Viv went for the pickled herring on the left and Jill decided the deep-fried croquette with an olive was what she was wanting. Both turned out to be very good and left us wanting more.

With that in mind, we decided to share a plate of deep-fried calamares. The portion was just enough for the two of us to share, incredibly fresh and delicious.
