WJ Tested: Globus La France Tour – Monaco and Monte Carlo
Globus Day 11:
We have explored the entire southern coastline of France on previous trips, so it was only fitting that we decided not to take any of the optional excursions offered on our Globus La France tour. So at last we had a free day to do as we pleased, and we needed it!
After making sure that there were no wake-up calls to bother us, we turned off our alarm clocks and slept in until 9 a.m. Then we made our way to the rooftop restaurant at the Fairmont Monte Carlo and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast buffet while we sat on the terrace and watched the mega yachts cruise by.
Next we grabbed a couple of beach towels from the pool area and made our way down to the beach – within walking distance of the hotel – where we lazed about, swam in the Mediterranean, and people watched for a couple of hours.
Monaco Fun Facts:
- Is located on the French Riviera
- Is a sovereign city state officially called the Principality of Monaco
- Is less than 10 miles from Italy (San Remo)
- Is about three times the size of The Mall in Washington D.C.
- Is surrounded by France on three sides and borders the Mediterranean Sea
- Is hugely popular with tourists and has a world-renowned casino
- Has no income tax
Following our morning on the beach we returned to the Fairmont hotel to freshen up before walking into Monaco and along the harbor.
During our wanderings we came upon a supermarket (also called Casino – which is a chain of French grocery stores) where we decided to purchase supplies (pate, foie gras terrine, olives, cheese, cornichons, baguette, nuts, fruit, chocolate, beer and wine) to take back to our guest room for a picnic on our balcony.
Leisurely we returned to the hotel and spent the remainder of the afternoon and early evening at the rooftop pool.
Monte Carlo Fun Facts:
- Is one of the four quarters that make up Monaco
- Monte Carlo literally means Mount Charles
- Is home to Place du Casino
- The Place du Casino has been featured in many movies, including two James Bond films
- Is home to such notable celebrities as Roger Moore, Shirley Bassey and Ringo Starr
We finished up our final evening in Monte Carlo with a stroll to the casino. A perfect ending to a perfect summer day!
