Day 14

This morning we didn’t need to rush, so our wake-up call wasn’t until 8:15 a.m., with breakfast scheduled for 8:45 a.m. and followed by a 9:45 a.m. departure.

The plan was that our group would take the TGV (high-speed train) from Dijon to Paris with Vic, while Antonio drove the coach with our luggage to Hotel Pullman Bercy in Paris – the same hotel we stayed in at the beginning of the tour.

After a brief 10-minute drive on the coach we arrived at the Dijon train station. Vic needed to collect the train tickets for our group, so he arranged to meet up with us 20 minutes later – giving us ample time to use the facilities and purchase sandwiches for lunch.

The train ride was quick (approximately 1 hour 37 minutes) and comfortable, and before we knew it we were pulling into Paris Gare de Lyon (one of the main stations).

TGV Fun Facts:

  • In France, this is the high speed rail service, the Train a Grande Vitesse
  • Switched to electric trains during development(from gas turbines) with the 1973 oil crisis
  • First opened for public service on September 27, 1981 with a train from Paris to Lyon
  • Travels at speeds up to 201 mph
  • At this time, a passenger cannot choose a specific seat on a train
  • Most of the time a reservation is required for the TGV in France

Those taking the afternoon optional excursion to the Louvre Museum (where the Mona Lisa can be viewed) went with Vic to join a tour bus for the ride across town. The remainder of our group (not joining the optional excursion) followed us as we took the metro to the hotel – quicker than riding along with the group going in the opposite direction to the Louvre.

By 2 p.m. we were checked in at the Hotel Pullman Paris Bercy, and as we were not taking part in the optional excursion in the evening (cabaret and dinner), we were finished with all of the tour activities – it was back to exploring on our own. Globus La France tour ~ it’s a wrap!
