Daily Itinerary:
Day 3 – London to Plymouth
Although Trafalgar calls this Day 3 of the tour, it is actually the first day of touring and meeting with the Tour Director, driver and fellow passengers.
After our 6:15 a.m. wake-up call (our Tour Director had requested one for all tour passengers), we had 30 minutes to ready ourselves for the day and have our luggage outside our hotel door.
At 7:00 a.m. we were enjoying the extensive hot-and-cold buffet breakfast at Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel (there is no better way to start a day than with a full English breakfast) and by 7:50 a.m. we found our way to the coach that would transport us around England for the next 8 nights.
Our Tour Director, Lyndon Oliver, and coach driver, Terrence Burrough, introduced themselves and we made an on-time departure at 8:00 a.m.
A quick detour to the Trafalgar London office to pick-up a few more passengers and we were quickly leaving the heart of London and heading west towards our final destination of the day, Plymouth.
Our 2.5 hour morning drive to Stonehenge with a comfort stop part-way provided the opportunity to relax and absorb the passing scenery. Nothing better than letting somebody else do the driving and sitting above the hedgerows — if we had been in a car we wouldn’t have been able to see very much of the landscape around us as the hedgerows are 7 +/- feet tall.
Highlights:
Runnymede – We drove through the area where the Magna Carta was signed.
Windsor Castle – A glimpse of the castle was made with a drive-by viewing from a distance.
Stonehenge – Being in a tour group has its advantages. When arriving at Stonehenge we were able to skip the long lines of people waiting to enter. This visit of just over an hour allowed us enough time to walk through this 5000-year-old pre-historic structure and listen to the narrative on the hand-held guide.
Salisbury – Tour Director Lyndon walked us from the coach to the Cathedral, giving us a brief history of the town and historic sites. For those of us that wanted to tour inside the Cathedral there was time to do that on our own or find a bite to eat for lunch at a nearby cafe.
Plymouth – Everyone in our group decided to take the optional excursion — Plymouth Harbour Cruise — which lasted one hour. It turned out to be a wonderful way to end our first day of touring.
At 6:00 p.m. we arrived at the Jurys Inn Plymouth and went directly to our room. As Lyndon had already checked us into the hotel, he was able to give out room keys on the coach as we rode the few minutes from the harbour to the hotel. Upon reaching our room, we were impressed that our luggage was already waiting for us.
As we were having our welcome drink in the hotel bar with Lyndon at 7:00 p.m. it was a quick change of outfits and back down to the lobby. Passengers were treated to a drink (beer, wine, cider or soft drink) and then it was off to the dining room for the included three-course meal.
