Trafalgar Tours Scenic England – Liverpool, Lake District & York
Daily Itinerary:
Day 7 – Liverpool, Lake District & York
Highlights:
Today we started off with a 2.5 hour drive from Liverpool to England’s Lake District in Cumbria.
Optional Excursion – First destination of this excursion was Haverthwaite Railway where we embarked on a 20-minute steam train ride (the steam engine was from 1950 and the carriages from 1930s).
The second part of the adventure on this excursion was a 40-minute Windermere cruise from Lakeside to Bowness on the MV Swan of 1938. Windermere is the largest natural lake in England.
Note: Windermere means lake, so saying “Lake Windermere” would be saying “Lake Lake”. This was another great-value optional excursion and another tour that all passengers participated in and enjoyed.
Bowness – Upon arriving in Bowness, Lyndon gave passengers a brief overview of the town and left us to roam alone for the next hour. As usual, we were in search of the local ale and asked his recommendation. He hadn’t led us down the wrong path thus far, so we had confidence he would pull out a winner this time, too. His suggestion here was the oldest tavern in Bowness, Hole int’ Wall. It had been happily serving patrons since 1612.
The early afternoon was spent driving across the Yorkshire Dales to York, famous for its Gothic cathedral.
York – Upon arriving, Lyndon gave passengers a 30-minute walking tour into the old city, to the Shambles and by York Minster. We then were able to explore the city center by ourselves for 1.5 hours before meeting the bus and being driven to our hotel. Our free time allowed us to delve a little further into the city and do a little shopping, walk the medieval city wall, or enjoy afternoon tea at a local tea shop.
Tonight we stayed at the three-star Holiday Inn York, situated 2.5 miles from the city center. While our guest room was typical of any Holiday Inn hotel there was a nice bar and lounge area for guests to relax and mingle.
The included Farewell Dinner at the hotel restaurant was excellent and a wonderful time was spent with our fellow travellers.
