Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island (PEI) is the capital and largest city of Canada’s smallest province (only 224 km long). With a population of approximately 36,000, Charlottetown is called “The Birthplace of Confederation” after the 1864 Charlottetown Conference where the confederation was formed.
Tree-lined streets feature brightly colored Victorian homes, historic buildings, and the coastline has miles of red sandstone cliffs dotted with red sand beaches.
We had shockingly warm and beautiful weather in Charlottetown (the locals told us this was nowhere near typical weather), which made it a wonderful day for picking up a tourist walking tour map and following the trail around the city.
St. Dunstan’s Basilica completed in 1919 was worthy of a visit – especially as the organ player was performing when we arrived. The stained glass windows are quite splendid.
Along Victoria Row – a pedestrian street lined with authentic local shops and restaurants – we came across The Anne of Green Gables Store (famous children’s novel from 1908 written by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery).
Finding ourselves at The Gahan House – pub and brewery in the center of town – we enjoyed a beer tasting and an order of mussels in a delicious tarragon and white wine broth. Sitting at the bar, we learned much about the local scene from bartender Ferdi – say hi to him from us if you make it there!
Further wandering saw us at Peake’s Wharf down on the harbor front where there was live music, plenty of souvenir shops and a Cow’s ice cream shop (a favorite Canadian ice cream maker) to keep us entertained for an hour or so before making our way back to Adventure of the Seas.
The cruise ship terminal has visitor information, tour bookings, and plenty of souvenir shopping options.
Sail away out of the harbor was scenic with lighthouses and red rock cliffs along the shoreline. The sea was calm and smooth as glass, and a beautiful departure from PEI.
