The city of Portland, Maine has the largest population in the state with approximately 67,000 inhabitants. The city was named after the English Channel Isle of Portland in Dorset, England, while Portland, Oregon was named after this city. The city was settled in 1632 and incorporated July 4, 1786.
The poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow gave Portland the nickname of “The Jewel by the Sea”. Wandering the streets lined with Victorian architecture, and along the harbor of Casco Bay, it was evident the title is appropriate.
There are ample historic buildings, churches, museums, restaurants, cafes, art galleries, and shopping galore to occupy a visit to the city. Tourism is a large segment of the economy, along with the university and fishing (lobsters).
HISTORIC WALKING TOUR WITH MAINE FOODIE TOURS
We had booked a 2-hour history walking tour of Portland with Maine Foodie Tours – same company that organized our Bar Harbor Foodie Tour.
Guide, Mike, did a fantastic job of bringing life to the city’s exciting and lengthy history, and kept our tour moving along at a comfortable pace.
Tour highlights included:
Monument Square
Wadsworth Longfellow Home
City Hall
Press Hotel
Eastern Cemetery
Lobster Market
Captain Sam’s Homemade Ice Cream
Included during the tour was a bottle of water and a Sammy Cone (tiny but ample size treat). For $29 this tour gives a terrific introduction to the history of Portland.
EASY WALKING CITY
Walking from the cruise terminal, the town’s attractions immediately start. The visitor information office at the terminal has plenty of maps and attraction brochures for activities to enjoy during a day in port.
SHIPYARD BREWING
Shipyard Brewing Co. is about a 5-minute walk from the cruise terminal and worth visiting for a beer tasting. A flight of 4 x 4 oz samples is only $6!
As our departure from Portland was by 3 PM, we had plenty of time to enjoy some of the trivia games and dinner at the Windjammer Marketplace before taking in the Ice Spectacular Show. Then it was an early night as the clocks go forward an hour before arriving in Saint John, New Brunswick tomorrow morning.
