Are River Cruise Shore Excursions Physically Demanding?

By WAVEJourney

Q: Are river cruise shore excursions in Europe physically demanding?

A: Shore excursions in Europe that are offered on a river cruise can involve a fair amount of walking over uneven (cobbled streets) ground. But, many of the river cruise companies (Uniworld, AMAWaterways, Viking River Cruises) will offer a “Gentle Walker” group to accommodate passengers that are unable to keep up to the pace of the regular tour groups. The group for slower walkers is usually much smaller in size than the regular groups, plus the guide will definitely shorten the amount of walking involved. These guides usually try to find participants a place to sit down during the tour while they give explanations of the history/architecture/culture.

On the other hand, for passengers that seek very active shore excursions, many of the river cruise companies now offer bike tours and full-length (3 hour) walking tours in destinations.
