WJ Tested: Insight Vacations Optional Excursion from Venice to the Island of Burano
Here is another opportunity to get out on the water in Venice… an opportunity that should not be missed. Venice is all about the Lagoon and we so thrilled at getting back on the water and cruising the Venetian Lagoon, sailing past the islands snapping photos, enjoying fantastic perspectives of Venice and eventually arriving at the colorful island of Burano. This was an approximate 45-minute ride and we enjoyed every minute of it. (Our group left on this tour at 1:30PM)
It is on this island, formerly home to many fishermen, that houses are brightly painted attracting the tourists to visit the retail shops and restaurants and purchase the lovely lace for which it is known. Our boat docked and we strolled for about 10 minutes with our Tour Director to the restaurant, Trattoria & Locanda Al Raspo De Ua.
Long tables were filled by our group, as well as other visiting tour groups. The staff promptly saw that we were amply provided with wine, beer, mineral water and soft drinks and then the procession of food began.
Bread rolls dotted the table. First came the red snapper purée on Melba toast. Next we all dug into the lasagne with shrimp, cuttlefish, clams & white fish. The seafood risotto was a big hit. Of course there was salad served family-style. Fried calamari rings and fried shrimp, along with fillets of John Dory followed. Wow… there was so much food.
As if we had room, the wait staff brought us sweets of almond bark and cookies. Fresh fruit of apple, pears and oranges arrived as well. We finished this fine meal with our choice of coffee or tea and we were also gifted with a mini bottle of amaretto! Mama Mia!
Quite replete, we left the restaurant around 4PM and enjoyed approximately 45 minutes of free time to explore the village.
The lace here is a definite highlight and we perused the shops and soaked in the personality of Burano. A lovely must-see when visiting Venice and surrounds.
Next… Classe and Assisi
