Travel Ireland: Time Traveling to Cabra Castle
Travel Ireland: Time Traveling to Cabra Castle
By Barbara Dodge
Going to Cabra Castle is like time traveling back to the 18th century. Located in Kingscourt in eastern Ireland, just an hour north of Dublin, this 4-star castle dates back to 1760. Decorated with meticulously preserved antiques, chandeliers and even a knight in shining armor, the venue is part historic castle, and part luxurious hotel.
With accommodations fit for a King (or Queen), completely updated sleeping rooms and very modern bathrooms await you. Two elegant on-site restaurants serve guests delicious complimentary breakfasts, lusciously scrumptious lunches and dinners (not to mention a grand, old, fully-stocked bar). Visitors to Cabra Castle will find everything they need or want there.
Many weddings have taken place in the flower lined courtyards and even in some of the quaint rooms inside the castle. Every square inch of Cabra Castle is absolutely photogenic. And speaking of photography, guests can take their cameras on a leisurely walk around the beautifully manicured gardens and enchanted courtyard, one hundred acres of splendor set next to the magnificent Dun a Ri Forest Park, needless to say, there are many photo ops. “This is a photographer’s paradise,” I heard an exuberant visitor say as she walked through the picturesque estate.
You’ll find the staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. They arranged a day trip for my family to the Newgrange Tumulus (don’t worry if you’ve never heard of it, just go), gave us directions and even recommended a great out-of-the-way place to eat dinner and have a pint.
Cabra Castle also has one of the most scenic 9-hole golf courses in all of Ireland. With the stunning gardens and lakes in the background, try to keep your eye on the ball. Horseback riding is always a favorite pastime and also a great way to see the gardens, the Run a Ri Forest Park, and gorgeous surrounding countryside.
This is a very affordable venue. Starting at 120 euros per night, Cabra Castle should be put on your “must see” list for your next trip to the Emerald Isle.
