Children on River Cruises in Europe

By WAVEJourney

Q: Are children welcome on river cruises in Europe?

A: River cruises are typically geared towards adult travellers. This is primarily due to the stateroom configuration/capacity (normally accommodating a maximum of two passengers), plus tours and excursions are more centered around history and culture. But, that does not mean that children can not or should not go on a river cruise in Europe. We have been on a few river cruises with children and they have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Rules for children as passengers vary between each river cruise company, but this is an example of the rules for Viking River Cruises: “On all cruises and cruise journeys, minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied and share a stateroom with a parent, legal guardian or other responsible adult over the age of 21.”

Some river cruise companies offer family-themed cruises on select sailings throughout the year – which we think would be a fantastic time to take a river cruise and experience the sailing through the eyes of a child.

Examples:

Tauck River Cruises offers Family Riverboat Adventure cruises in Europe for guests 8 years and older. Cabins are double occupancy, but some of them are adjacent to suit families.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection offers multigenerational family-friendly programs on select sailings for summer and Christmas Market cruises. We would love to take our 8-year-old niece on a Christmas Market river cruise – she’d be in heaven with all of the treats!
