WAVEJourney Discovers the Wonders of Skåne in South Sweden
Follow in our footsteps – WAVEJourney recommends some of our favorite things to do, see and experience in Skåne:
Sofiero, located 5 km north of Helsingborg, is named for Princess Sofia and Crown Prince Oskar of Sweden, who bought a homestead in 1864 where they built a summer home. Today visitors to Sofiero can enjoy the beautiful park setting, gardens (including an English garden), and expansive grounds with over 10,000 plants and 500 types of rhododendrons. Also, the restaurant located in the castle is a very good dining option. Adult admission starts at 80 SEK/US$12.00
With 36 hectares/88 acres of grounds that are the home to an 18th century manor house, spectacular rose gardens, historic buildings, museums, farms with a variety of animals, and an outdoor theater, this is a place that all ages will enjoy. In summer the flowers around the gardens are in full bloom and the colors are amazing. Be sure to stop by Hedström´s candy shop and buy a bag of local sweets. Adult admission starts at 80 SEK/US$12.00
Anyone that is a lover of nature and the great outdoors will be thrilled with a visit to Kullaberg. The nature reserve encompasses 35 square km/13.5 square miles on a peninsula with steep rock cliffs, and provides plenty of activities for all fitness levels to enjoy. Go hiking, biking, fishing, birdwatching, diving, repelling, take a porpoise tour, or just pay a visit to Kullen lighthouse.
Kulla Peninsula
Viken and Arild are small, charming fishing villages along the coast about 30 km north of Helsingborg, where there are an abundance of inns and genuine Scanian restaurants. Also pay a visit to Mölle, a lovely seaside resort that was renowned in the latter part of the 19th century for mixed-sex bathing (scandalous in that era). Stay at the Grand Hotel Mölle, perched on the top of a hill that affords splendid views of the Kattegat Sea.
Swedish artist, Gunilla von Werder started making classic Venetian masks 18 years ago training with Professor Agostino Dessì, a master maskmaker in Florence, Italy. Her gallery is conveniently located next to Krapperup Castle.
After a busy day of sightseeing, spend the afternoon doing one of the things the Swedish love best – fika (a coffee break and cakes). There are so many different kinds of cakes and gateux to choose from at Flickorna Lundgren (all made from family recipes), finding your favorite could turn into quite a challenge. We especially enjoyed the King’s cakes, vanilla hearts with an interesting story behind them – pay a visit to Flickorna Lundgren to hear all about it. Guess we’re not the only ones that thought they were delicious as approximately 37,000 are sold each season. The quaint cottage and mature garden are delightful for relaxing with a cup of coffee or glass of homemade juice.
Located in an old stoneware factory, all of the products available for purchase are made in Sweden. This is a great place to view unique and high quality pottery (especially the salt glaze ceramic items), ceramics, clothing, arts and crafts that have been locally produced.
