Insight Vacations Review – Treasures of Spain, Portugal & Morocco – Madrid & Segovia
16-Night Motorcoach Trip in 2011
Morning Tour of Madrid
Our first full day on Insight Vacations Treasures of Spain, Portugal & Morocco tour started with a 7 am wake-up call and at 7:30 am we were enjoying a delicious breakfast buffet in the hotel’s dining room. By 8:30 am we were departing the hotel under the expert care of our Portuguese driver, Joao, and local Madrid guide, Teresa, for a 3-hour driving tour of Madrid.
Included in this tour was a visit to the Royal Palace and Armory where Teresa guided us on foot. Around 11:30 am we dropped by the hotel to return those not going on the optional afternoon tour to Segovia.
Optional Excursion: Segovia
Just before noon the coach departed Madrid for Segovia, with Teresa continuing as our guide for the afternoon trip. The coach dropped us off near the famous Roman Aqueduct and Teresa did an excellent job of explaining the significance of this ancient monument. After strolling through Segovia’s old town area, Teresa informed us we had an hour free for lunch and suggested trying the local speciality, suckling pig. For those of us that just wanted a local pastry, she pointed out where to buy the delicious Ponche Segoviano– a dessert cake made with marzipan, sponge cake and egg cream. We picked up the sweet and syrupy Ponche Segoviano (loved it) and did some more wandering around the town on our own.
Following lunch we met with Teresa in the main plaza and continued our walking tour. We meandered through the town and to the outskirts for a visit to the Alcazar of Segovia – also known as Segovia Castle. This same castle was the inspiration for Disneyland’s castle. After touring the Alcazar and enjoying beautiful vistas of the surrounding countryside from our viewpoint, we walked to where the bus was meeting us and sat back for the 45-minute return drive to our Madrid hotel at 5:15 pm.
Madrid Free Evening
Being on tour all day had worn us out so we decided it was siesta time for a couple of hours. But by 8:30 pm we were refreshed and ready for a night of excitement, great food and to experience more of Madrid’s hectic nightlife.
