Insight Vacations Review – Treasures of Spain, Portugal & Morocco – Fes to Marrakesh
16-Night Motorcoach Trip in 2011
Ifrane
Our driving distance from Fes to Marrakesh was 390 km, which required an 8 am departure from our hotel. We witnessed a dramatic change of scenery as we travelled through the rolling agricultural fields near Fes to the mini-Swiss alpine village of Ifrane(home to the Al Akhawayn University) in the Middle Atlas Mountains. Situated at an elevation of 5400′, Ifrane was a complete surprise – if we didn’t know better we could have been in a town in the Alps. A quick 20-minute comfort stop in Ifrane gave us just enough time to stretch our legs and have a coffee. Throughout the journey to Marrakesh, Javier and Abi continued their commentary about the history and culture of Morocco and the areas we were driving through.
Our second comfort stop was at a roadside restaurant that had a very good local handicraft shop and was a good place to have fresh-squeezed orange juice. An hour later we made had a 50-minute break for lunch at a hotel restaurant on the outskirts of Beni Mellal.
Marrakesh
Another successful day of touring thanks to Philip, who did a marvelous job of delivering us safely to our destination, the 5-star Le Meridien N’Fis hotel in Marrakesh by 5:45 pm.
Optional Excursion: Marrakesh Dinner & Entertainment
Tonight’s optional excursion was a horse buggy ride to the bustling Djamaa El Fnamarket square and dinner at a traditional restaurant with entertainment. All of our group were participating, so this was bound to be a very fun night out.
Once we arrived at Djamaa El Fna, in the old part of Marrakesh, we followed Javier and Abi through the lively market stalls where locals and tourists alike were dining on every sort of food imaginable. Both the sights and smells were delicious! Javier stopped at one particular vendor that was selling bowls of snails– cooked with lots of garlic and black pepper – and he and Jill shared a big bowl of the tasty and tender morsels.
Continuing on through the market we made our way to Restaurant Palais Arabe where we enjoyed a fantastic meal of pickled vegetables, couscous, lamb tagine, milk pie, cookies, mint tea and beer or wine. While we dined, belly dancing, singing and playing of music continuously entertained us. After dinner we walked to where Philip was waiting with the coach had a short ride back to the hotel.
Time to call it a night after another very interesting day in Morocco!
