Insight Vacations Review – Treasures of Spain, Portugal & Morocco – Casablanca & Rabat
16-Night Motorcoach Trip in 2011
Marrakesh to Rabat
Casablanca
With an 8:30 am hotel departure scheduled for the trip to Rabat via Casablanca, we were up by 7 am. Today was the first toll road drive we had taken and along the way we stopped at a service station in Barrachid for a 20-minute comfort stop. Abi continued his commentary on Moroccan history and culture as we drove northwest towards Casablanca, and he explained to us the King’s orders that by 2014 there won’t be anymore slums anywhere in the country! Our first impression of Casablanca was one of surprise – we didn’t expect such a large and modern city. We continued to drive through the city and made a lunch stop along the waterfront for 45 minutes.
After lunch we drove past the Hassan II Mosque, a very impressive sight and the largest mosque in the country. We made a quick photo stop here and also at the site of Rick’s Cafe from the movie Casablanca.
Although the movie wasn’t filmed in Casablanca, the restaurant and bar visitors come to see was designed to replicate the one made famous in the movie classic by Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.
Rabat
Continuing on towards Rabat (the capital of the Kingdom of Morocco), we arrived at the King’s Palace by 3:15 pm. Here we were able to walk the grounds with Abi as he explained about the buildings and their uses. We drove past the Sala Colonial Fortress and then paid a visit to see the Hassan Tower which faces the Mohammed V Mausoleum. From there we made a 10-minute walk to our hotel, the 4-star Golden Tulip Farah, right across from the old Medina. A buffet dinner at the hotel was included and the rest of our evening was free time.
