Cango Caves, South Africa – WAVEJourney Travel Tip
We would rather be deep below ground and exploring Cango Caves in South Africa!
The Klein Karoo in South Africa has many interesting and amazing attractions to enthrall visitors, one of them being Cango Caves in the foothills of the Swartberg range near the town of Oudtshoorn.
The caves were first discovered in 1780 by Jacobus van Zyl, a local farmer in the area, but found artifacts show that people were living at the entrance to the caves as far back as the Middle and Stone Ages.
Tours of the limestone caves are available every day except December 25th, and there are two tour options available to choose from are:
1. Standard Tour – 60 minutes long; tours depart every hour on the hour from 9 AM onwards; ZAR 55/adults, ZAR 30/children; this is a good option for most able-bodied visitors and not too
strenuous.
2. Adventure Tour – 90 minutes long; tours depart every hour on the half-hour from 9:30 AM onwards; ZAR 70/adults, ZAR 45/children; this tour requires a bit of a scramble at the end and is more strenuous than the standard tour.
WJ took the standard tour of the caves and was impressed with our guide’s knowledge, sense of humor and musical ability in the drum room.
Cango Caves is definitely an attraction to add to your list when planning a visit to South Africa’s Garden Route.
