WAVEJourney Cruises The Rhine Gorge
We would rather be waking up to castles and vineyards on the steep terraces along the Rhine Gorge! The beautiful 65 km section of the River Rhine between the German towns of Koblenz and Bingen is known as the Rhine Gorge.
The steepness of the slopes upon which vineyards are planted amazed us. We wouldn’t want to be the ones tending the vines in this area – although, we’d be mighty fit.
It is in this area of the river that the Loreley (Lorelei) is to be found – a 433 feet high, slate cliff situated near the town of St. Goarshausen. Because of the narrowness and deepness at this point of the river, it is known as the most dangerous stretch of the Rhine and where many shipwrecks occurred and mariners lost their lives.

Enjoying a river cruise through this area is the ideal way to view the gorge, towns along the river and the remains of many medieval castles.
Towns along the Rhine Gorge that can be viewed are: Boppard; Bacharach; Rudesheim; St. Goarshausen; Koblenz; Assmannshausen; Lahnstein; Rhens; Sankt Goar; Oberwesel; Braubach; Kaub; Lorch; Bingen.
WJ sailed this section of the Rhine in March 2008 while aboard AMAWaterways ship the MS Amadagio and highly recommends this journey – in fact, after cruising between Amsterdam and Giurgiu, Romania, in our opinion this stretch of river is the affords the most spectacular scenery.
