The Portuguese capital, and largest city, of Lisbon (Lisboa) is situated on the banks of the Tagus River (Rio Tejo) estuary. This hilly city that was mostly destroyed in a massive earthquake in 1755 is one of WJ’s favorite European destinations. This photo of the statue of José I (Joseph I) in Praça do Comércio was taken during a port of call visit while sailing from Rotterdam to Cape Town with Holland America Line. Lisbon is the main cruise port in Portugal and offers visitors plenty to do and see.
