While visiting Siem Reap with Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection, an excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor Thom was included.

ANGKOR THOM FACTS:

  • Angkor Thom is a ruined citadel a few kilometers north of Angkor Wat
  • In the Khmer language, the name means “Great City”
  • It was the capital city of the Khmer empire
  • Angkor Thom was established by King Jayavarman II near the end of the 12th century
  • The city was built in a near perfect square and the walls run 12 km in length
  • There are 5 monumental entrance gates large enough for elephants to pass through
  • Bayon, a Buddhist temple, is the centerpiece of Angkor Thom, with classic carved faces
