ANGKOR THOM FACTS:
- Angkor Thom is a ruined citadel a few kilometers north of Angkor Wat
- In the Khmer language, the name means “Great City”
- It was the capital city of the Khmer empire
- Angkor Thom was established by King Jayavarman II near the end of the 12th century
- The city was built in a near perfect square and the walls run 12 km in length
- There are 5 monumental entrance gates large enough for elephants to pass through
- Bayon, a Buddhist temple, is the centerpiece of Angkor Thom, with classic carved faces
