Mosquitos are badass little mofos. Nobody likes ’em. Malaria, Dengue, Yellow Fever, West Nile Virus… and now Zika Virus has been added to the worry list when travelling. The Center for Disease Control says no vaccine exists for the Zika Virus, and states that to prevent Zika one must protect against mosquitos bites.
A recent adventure had WAVE Journey hopscotching around the Americas from the Dominican Republic and on to Columbia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Mexico. All these countries have reports of active Zika Virus transmission. We seriously needed to be cognizant of this situation and prepare for the prevention of mosquito bites.
The CDC recommends, among other suggestions, to wear a long sleeve shirt when in such areas. Fortunately for us, ExOfficio BugsAway Collection came to the rescue. Jill sported their BugsAway Lumen Long Sleeve Shirt and Viv their BugsAway Breez’r shirt on many occasions, particularly when out for a walk or visiting rural areas.
This Insect Shield repellent apparel has been treated with Permethrin insect repellent. Permethrin has been proven effective against mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers and midges. The Insect Shield treatment is bound to fabric fibers so it isn’t on your skin.
BUGSAWAY LUMEN LONG SLEEVE SHIRT
This good looking shirt (love the Azul color) also provides a UPF 30 protection. The shirt wicks moisture, is breathable with a mesh weave at back yoke and under arms and is stitched with thumb loops.
This shirt is lightweight, easy to handwash and drip dry while travelling and maintains its effectiveness for 70 washings. With a natural fit, the shirt is 65% Polyester / 35% Cotton. It certainly provided peace of mind for this big adventure and will continue to be used for many more.
BUGSAWAY BREEZ’R SHIRT
The Breez’r shirt has many of the same features as the Lumen – lightweight, ideal for travel, easy to handwash and drip dry, moisture wicking, Insect Shield effective for 70 washings, plus UPF 30 protection. But, it also has some additional features that were welcome on hot days – vents on the front and back seams that allow airflow, and a collar that provided full protection from the sun (plus it also made sure the camera strap did not rub Viv’s neck raw). This shirt has a zippered pocket at the left chest area which is handy for carrying a driver’s license and credit card, etc.
During the times we were wearing these ExOfficio garments, we did not get any bug bites at all – that’s what our goal was and it was achieved. From now on, WAVEJourney will make sure to have at least a couple of ExOfficio BugsAway clothing items in our travel bags whenever we venture off to areas that have risks of disease from mosquitoes or other bugs.
