Just spent a fabulous month in Bali, Indonesia, staying at various digs. Without a
doubt the best was at the gorgeous Kembali villas in Seminyak. You know the
luxurious feeling of your own private villa, room maid, cooked breakfast, massages
etc, couldn’t be better.

Along the way, visited Amed in the north. Excellent diving onto a US Liberty ship, and
coral snorkeling, in the placid (lake) ocean around Singaraja. Tried out surf-board
riding after witnessing the magic of the riders at Echo Beach (West Bali) and down
around Uluwatu in the south.
.
Shopping - don't quite know where to start. Great prices for new and antique solid
teak furniture which is made here and in Java. Had clothes copied, huge range of silks
and cottons, plus leather jackets made to measure many colours available. Heaps of
silver and bead jewellery and the most artistic homewares at many places.
We also went to the buffalo races up at Negara and along the way visited a turtle
hatchery, prawn farm and an eco-tourist resort.
Moving around: Taxis in main towns are everywhere or you can rent motor bikes/car.
For longer distances, we prefer to engage a driver with car, around $50/day. He
knows the way, can act as a guide and can carry stuff. Getting lost can be fun but a
waste of time. A new service started this month offering GPS rental units for us
adventurers.

The food here is just to die for and so cheap.
Apart from the beer and locally produced
spirits, the imported brand spirits can be a bit
expensive. We started out eating at the
more established restaurants run by
European & Australian chefs like Warisan &
Sarong. Soon we became more adventurous,
trying Indonesian “warungs”, which offer
excellent & cheap food. Fabulous fresh
seafood restaurants, serving lobster and
snapper, calamari, French fries, what could
be better and under $10/head.
