Packing a Suit on a River Cruise

By WAVEJourney

Q: Should I pack a suit for a river cruise? Does my wife need to pack an evening/cocktail dress?

A: It really depends on the river cruise company you are cruising with as to whether or not a suit or cocktail dress is required. River cruising is much more relaxed, and the dress code differs from the elegant/formal nights on ocean ships. If you like to dress up, go ahead. If you prefer to stay wearing resort casual clothing at dinner, you should choose a river cruise company that has a more relaxed dress code.

For example: If cruising with Uniworld River Cruises, they suggest a suit and evening/cocktail dress can be worn for the Captain’s Welcome and Farewell dinners. Other times, smart casual dress is appropriate for dining in the evening. On the other hand, Viking River Cruises suggests that smart casual attire is sufficient for all evening dining.
