Two days in Sorrento was certainly not long enough, but it was just the right amount of time for us to determine that we would revisit the area again and plan to stay for a couple of weeks. Today’s destination was Rome, but first we would visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pompeii which in AD 79 was buried by a catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

A beautiful morning in Sorrento started with a 6:30 am wake-up call, with bags out by 7 am we went to breakfast at the rooftop terrace of Hotel Regina. By 7:45 am we met up with our group and Tour Director Mark in the lobby for a 10-minute walk to where Alberto was waiting with the coach (outside the city walls). Departing Sorrento at 8:00 am Mark started his commentary about the history of Pompeii – and kept us completely enthralled during the 1 hour drive.

Upon arriving in Pompeii we met with local guide Willy for our tour. Again we bypassed the long lines of tourists waiting to enter and spent 90-minutes touring the grounds, listening carefully to all the pertinent information Willy shared along the way.

Located south of the city of Naples, Pompeii lay buried and preserved under volcanic ash for more than 1,600 years. Now it is possible to visit the site, see the excavated ruins and get a glimpse into the daily life of the Romans that lived during the time before the eruption. Note: The cobbled streets between the ruins are very uneven and may be challenging to walk on.

Once our tour was completed we had about 30 minutes of free time outside the site – there are cafes and souvenir stalls near where the coaches pick-up passengers.
