After departing Pompeii, Alberto drove our group north along the autostrada A1 towards Rome. Just over an hour into our journey, Tour Director Mark suggested we make a brief additional stop, at the Cassino War Cemetery.

The Cassino War Cemetery lies in the Commune of Cassino, Province of Frosinone, 139 kilometres south-east of Rome; British, Canadian, Indian, New Zealand, Australian and Polish soldiers that died in WWII are buried here. The head stones for the graves are made from Carrara marble and the beautifully manicured cemetery is maintained by the Italian government.

Some of the fiercest fighting in Cassino occurred during the early months of 1944, when the Allies helped stop the Germans advance towards Rome. The majority of the 4,271 Commonwealth soldiers buried in the cemetery died in the WWII battles during those early months; 289 of the burials are unidentified.
