There are many routes across Europe that lead pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela in North Western Spain, but the most commonly travelled route is the Camino Frances route from Roncesvalles on the French border to Santiago in Galicia. Cathedrals, monasteries, churches and other historic buildings are found along the way. Passing through tiny villages and towns and occasionally entering a large city is also typical of what you will encounter on this pilgrimage that dates back hundreds of years. Many parts of the camino are accessible only to people walking, riding horses or mountain biking, as the route mainly follows country lanes and paths. The most popular form of transportation is on your own two feet and carrying on your back the least amount of worldly possessions possible. The Camino Frances route is a journey on foot of over 500 miles/800 kilometres, that most pilgrims cover in about 32 days. Some will only have time to walk a week at a time and so it may take them several years to complete the entire Camino Frances route. Many walk the Camino for spiritual or religious reasons, others walk for sport or the culture and history along the route, but whatever your reasons you will find a lot more than what you were looking for when you started.
