Day 5 – June 7: Argostoli, Greece

We slept so soundly again that we had no idea the ship had actually docked in Argostoli, the capital of the largest Ionian island of Cephalonia, until we switched on the TV and turned to the webcam channel. It was now 8 am and we had missed Nieuw Amsterdam arriving at the small Greek town around 7 am, but it was time to make our way to the Lido buffet for breakfast before making our way ashore.

The weather was a little cooler than it had been since we started the cruise and skies were overcast and threatening rain, but by 10 am we were walking off the ship and making the easy 20-minute stroll into the town center of Argostoli. Content with watching local fisherman mend their nets along the old  harbor and wandering through town for a couple of hours (Argostoli does not have much in the way of historic buildings) we made it back to the ship just before it started to rain and in time for lunch poolside (the retractable roof was closed due to the rain).

After attending the informative Tom Time with Travel Guide Tom in the Crow’s Nest at 4:30 pm we were all set with port information on how to do Santorini tomorrow on our own.

Then it was time to dress for our dinner at Tamarind Restaurant where we had a 7 pm reservation – $15 extra charge per person. For our Tamarind dining adventure we both started with soup – Jill had the Yin-Yang Scallop Consomme and I had the Chicken Pho with Wild Lime and Rice Stick Noodles. Our appetizer choices were Trail of Spices Satay Sampler for Jill and an assortment of 6 sushi  rolls for myself. As an entree, Jill chose the Cantonese Duck with Hainan Rice and I was in seventh heaven with the Penang Red Curry Coconut Chicken. We then rounded off the meal with the Tamarind Chocolate and Chocolate Almond Fortune Cookie – delicious! We both heartily agreed that Tamarind was well worth the extra charge and we would definitely dine there again before the end of the cruise.

Following dinner Jill made for the casino and a poker tournament while I searched out friends and sang the rest of the night away in the Piano Bar.
