We would rather be visiting the city of Pau in France The picturesque city of Pau lies in northwest Bearn at the base of the Pyrenees, and is a great base in this region with close proximity to many villages, towns and scenic countryside. The Christian pilgrimage city of Lourdes is only 30 km (20 miles) away and easily accessed by car, bus or train from Pau. There are many historic monuments and buildings to be explored and enjoyed. Don't miss touring the Chateau de Pau, it is where Henry IV was born in 1553. Hikers can enjoy a 60 km (40 mile) trek along the GR 65 to the Spanish border. If you're not an outdoor enthusiast, there are many fine restaurants and plenty of shopping to please any budget and taste. For fellow winos: there are amazing wines from the Jurancon wine-growing region to keep you busy too. On a clear day the northern Pyrenees can be viewed - only 50 km (30 miles) west - from the Boulevard des Pyrenees. If arriving by train, take the Funiculaire de Pau from the railway station to reach the Boulevard and city center. Pay attention to what is perched upon the counter directly behind the cafe owner - Fifi loves to hang out on top of the counter next to the phone. It is much different in French cafe's than what you would expect to find in North America.
