What To Do In Palermo We would rather be touring the local markets in Palermo, Sicily! Throughout the tiny medieval streets of Palermo, visitors to this Arab-influenced city can find numerous food markets set up under brightly colored tarps. These markets that are a valuable resource to local residents are typically open everyday but Sunday, starting at 9 AM. One of the fruits that caught WJ's eye was the tarocchi or blood oranges - squeeze a few of them and you have a glass of the sweetest and prettiest orange juice on the planet. There are colorful vegetables of every description, and freshly caught fish and seafood from the waters of the Mediterranean - most of which we had not seen before. WJ spent a couple of hours people watching at the markets throughout a few of Palermo's neighbourhoods - we could easily have spent all day, but there was so much more to see and do. If you want to get off the beaten track and away from tourists, visit the local markets to get a real taste of Sicilian people and life. Keep your eyes and ears open and stay alert. The pickpockets are less of a threat than the scooters. WJ recommends a visit to the four busiest markets where locals shop: ~ Capo - located behind the Teatro Massimo ~ Vucciria - located between Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Via Roma ~ Borgo Vecchio - located between Piazza Sturzo and Piazza Ucciardone ~ Ballaro - located close to the central station Grab a city map and hit the streets!
