Things To Do In Dusseldorf, Germany

We would rather be sampling the local libations in Dusseldorf, Germany!

Dusseldorf is famous for a few liquids, two of WJ's favorites being:
~ Altbier - also known as "old beer" is a dark beer only made in the Dusseldorf region from
top-fermenting yeast;

~ Killepitsch - a liquor made up of a combination of 90 fruits, herbs, berries and spices, with a
whopping 43% alcohol content.

Finding a pint of Altbier in Dusseldorf's Old Town (Altstadt) is a piece of cake, as three out of the
four brewpubs that actually brew the Altbier on premises are located here. WJ's top choice for
enjoying a glass of Altbier is at Uerige. Arriving at Uerige at 10AM (opening time), we were not
alone in our search for a pint - the locals had beaten us to it and a few appeared as though they
regularly made it their first stop of the day.

The Altbier is drawn from the wooden barrel into the simple 25cl glass that it is traditionally
served in. This beer is not as dark to the tastebuds as its appearance would have you believe. A
good foamy head similar to that on traditional British ales leads you to a glass of liquid heaven -
a subtle malt flavor with a tint of hops.

Even if you're not a beer lover, Uerige is a nice place to find some tasty local snacks and meals
whilst visiting the Altstadt.

WJ purchased a small bottle of the local liquer Killepitsch, a herbal drink that tastes rather
medicinal, from a shop that specializes in liquors of all kinds. This is a drink that is enjoyed in
small quantities either neat or on the rocks. Rumor has it that it's good for all that ails you. It is
easy to find in shops throughout the Altstadt or visit a bar and do some sampling there.

Cheers!

Happy Travels!
